It’s frighteningly easy to forget the beauty that exists all around us. It’s as if we’re conditioned—or worse, we simply choose—to focus on the worst of humanity. Almost every news story is about something horrific or tragic, so the few positive stories we get feel like a breath of fresh air. At a lecture I attended a while back, “The Psychology of Storytelling” by Lindsay Doran—a talk I highly recommend to anyone interested at all in positive psychology and/or film—the subject of positivity in film was a highlight of the discussion. Doran mentioned that much of the positivity in films had disappeared, replaced by tragedy or horror and overall negative and depressing themes; even many comedies make us laugh at the expense of others’ pain or use crude and raunchy humor…
